From the look of the system he has right now, replacing parts would just be a waste of time and money.

You can find a pretty decent pre-built for $600 (or less), but then again, this was during the holiday season. :P
My suggestion is to just replace older parts.

replacing older parts works.... If you have half decent parts to begin with.
You can't have a computer from 05 and just update its parts with out having a bit of difficulty.
It gets to a point where you are not updating old parts your building a new computer

In most countries selling harmful things like drugs is punishable. Then howcome people can sell Microsoft software and go unpunished?
The Linux philosophy is "laugh in the face of danger". Oops. Wrong one. "Do it yourself". That's it.
Going from DOS to Linux is like trading a glider for an F117.

a good place to start would be craigslist, alot of nerds build custom computerz and sellem cheap, i see quadcores, with 1TB hdd, 4gbram running on win7x64 going for no more then 300/400

Also 8GB of ram is kinda pointless even if you are running a 64bit processor/os. if your running 32bit you wont even use more then 3.9

only if you run 64bit, apparently there's still always a max on usable memory.
and virtual machines doesn't take much ram I'd assume its a issue with your computer.

ubuntu OS doesnt (i dont think) the mother board and processor do. I will ensure the motherboard can handle 8gb
and virtual machines do if you want to run them at the speed of a standard os

Reviewing what you said you were doing with this computer, (gaming, VM, etc.) I guarantee you will need to spend 800+. What I would do in your situation is reuse your old box for a Linux-only machine, so you're not throwing stuff out, and settle for a cheaper computer.

Whats the point of running Linux to run another OS?
Do you actually use Linux for what its worth or are you just trying to look cool?
Not trying to sound like an ass but I think using one OS to load another is restarted.
You want to game. You want the BEST performance possible. Running one OS + another is not going to give you the BEST performance.
Hell unless you program/run a server I don't see ANY reason why you would even run Ubuntu.
Its like buying a mac just to run windows, Stupid.
Get a PC, load windows 7 on that bitch, have a dual boot if you must have Ubuntu but Don't load both at the same time if you are considering gaming

One typo? Atleast he's right, you want a gaming computer, obviously Linux isn't your computer, and I doubt you program, go with windows 7 if you want all that and get a Linux if you plan on doing other things.
