From what I've heard vb is like english, once you know it, its hard to learn any other language.

VB is not like English. COBOL is more like English. But I wouldn't recommend learning it, and being more "English-like" doesn't necessarily mean it will be easier to learn.

I recommend Python or Ruby.

Right, but anybody who already knows how to program will know how to learn a new language...so I'm guessing he doesn't know any.  I doubt whatever he wants to do will require languages as error-prone as C and C++.  So, if he only wants to learn to program, it'd probably be better to start with something easier.

Don't learn C++. Ever. It's a piece of shit, abomination of a programming language. To do anything even remotely involved you need to pick your poison of toolkits, extensions, and useless piles of shitty libraries which all have their own conventions and styles to adhere to. Do not do it.

Stick to pure languages. Static, type safe, garbage collected languages. You know, the ones that god intended.

Where the hell did you hear that and how do you figure? So many applications are programmed in C++ including Battle.net bots.
